Should Parents Be Concerned About Miralax?

6683213340117856314.jpg

A group of parents of children with neuropsychological issues released a statement that their children’s problems began when they took Miralax after doctor’s prescription. This over the counter medication was approved by FDA in 1999 to treat constipation in adults and it is the most widely used laxative in America. However, in the last couple of years, Miralax has been used to treat constipation in children very successfully.

This article will look at some of the claims laid against Miralax in connection to it causing neuropsychological issues;

What Caused the Reported Neuropsychological issues in those Children?

Unfortunately, the symptoms reported by all the parents who released the statement are not consistent with one another. Some report

aggression and paranoia, others autistic behavior while others report motor issues. If the issues were caused by one substance, the symptoms would be similar in nature. This statement has also come up 10 to 15 years after the children were affected so it can be hard to ascertain what really caused the problems.

Does Miralax Contain Ethylene Glycol also found in Anti-freeze?

The main compound found in Miralax is known as Polyethylene glycol (PEG 3350) and it’s very easy to confuse it with ethylene glycol found in antifreeze. When many ethylene glycol molecules are joined together, they make a very strong and completely different molecule called polyethylene glycol. PEG 3350 is an incredibly strong and heavy molecule that cannot be absorbed by the body like ethylene glycol. Because of its weight and strength, PEG 3350 is very stable and it can’t be broken down for absorption so it just passes through the intestines after doing its work.

How does PEG 3350 Work?

Miralax is an osmotic laxative which means it attracts water to itself. Constipation happens when the intestines absorb all the water and leaves the stool with little water. Polyethylene glycol molecules attract water to the stool instead of letting it all to be absorbed in the intestines. This makes the stool softer and easy to pass and sometimes it can work too well and cause diarrhea. Polyethylene glycol is a perfect laxative because it is passive meaning it doesn’t cause the intestines to do anything and it is not absorbed by the body at all.

Were there Traces of Ethylene Glycol Found in Miralax in 2008?

Unfortunately, small amounts (15 ug/ml) of ethylene glycol which is poisonous were found in Miralax in 2008. However, the amount was very little to cause any harm to children or adults. For a child to be poisoned by the ethylene glycol found in Miralax, they would need to consume at least 1 liter of the powdered medication.

Why is a Drug Approved for Adults Only Being Prescribed to Children?

Due to the fact that it’s very hard to get approvals to test drugs on children, most drugs are actually not approved for kids on the label. This means that doctors are left to decide for themselves if a drug is actually safe for children by testing in in small doses. Over the years, Miralax has been working perfectly in children without causing any side effects. However, the FDA has begun actual study at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia just to ascertain that Miralax is completely safe for children.

Since it hasn’t been proven that Miralax is harmful in any way to children, it remains one of the best laxatives out there. However, if you are still on the fence about it, there are other methods you can try at home such as giving your child a lot of water, prune juice and papaya for constipation.

What is Adderall Used for Besides ADHD

6683212329738805706.jpg

Adderall is a drug which constitutes of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine components. Upon intake of this drug, it stimulates the brain and the nervous system of an individual. It therefore alters the brain chemistry. As a result of this effect, Adderall lowers the action of the three neurotransmitters namely; dopamine, norepinephrine, as well as serotonin.

This drug is provided under prescription measures. Having known to treat two primary conditions in adults and children, the drug has a variety of reasons which will be explained later in this article. The conditions are as a result of hyperactivity deficit of and narcolepsy. In detail, this is a condition where a person gets into sleep in unusual times during the day. Food and drug administration has approved Adderall to treat this disorders. However, this drug needs prescription advice but today, the drug is bought on streets consequently ending up abusing and using it legally.

Adderall can be accessed in three different forms; extended- release version, immediate- release version and different amounts of dosage. Individuals diagnosed with ADHD and Narcolepsy receive prescription to start with a small dose and end with high amounts. Taking this medicine while under this condition leads to loss of focus, concentration and behavior control. Calming effect is also common to individuals who take the drug without having this condition.

Individuals with no ADHD and take this drug tend to feel highly. This denotes that someone feels boost of more energy, self confidence and strange concentration. Negative effects of using this drug while not under its prescription are as follows; anxiety, change in heart beat and pressure, a feeling of nervousness as well as psychosis.

Treatment of narcolepsy is another use of this drug which is approved by food and drug administration (FDA). This is a condition where a person sleeps excessively from the normal hours followed by strange signs of memory like hallucination, loss of muscle control and sleep paralysis. To detect a person with narcolepsy, you will find that they fall asleep at very odd times of the day and as a consequence intake of Adderall increases their wakefulness as it acts as a stimulant.

Other reasons a doctor might need to prescribe Adderall drug for you is for treating depression issues. However, food and drug administration has not approved the drug to be used for this purposes. What should be noted is that Adderall is frequently abused drug by individuals. The drug is commonly abused at the united states of america for some reasons such as; assisting people to study and understand, enabling young people to accomplish a particular task in their lives, make people feel more sociable even when they are alone.

Among the people who abuse this drugs are the students during exam periods trying to master content in order to perform better in their classes. In spite of this, young professionals also use the drug as they try to advance their careers. Others may use it to suppress their appetite thus reducing weight.

From the above data, Adderall is formally used for narcolepsy apart from treating ADHD. While doctors may instruct it to be taken for other mere issues, a great number of people abuse the drug.

What Is the Difference Between Amoxicillin and Augmentin?

6683210674028231246.jpg

Antibiotics are the most efficient way to fight against bacterial infection. Almost all adults have been prescribed with either Amoxicillin or Augmentin at least once during their lifetime. For the average individual, Augmentin is seen as a stronger version of Amoxicillin. In reality, these two antibiotics are different and should be prescribed for their appropriate use.

Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin is the most common antibiotic prescribed by doctors for various infections ranging from a strep throat to even dental infections. For children, Amoxicillin is always the preferred antibiotic since it does not have concerning side effects. Also, it is quite good at fighting against many types of infections and it is usually the first option for all doctors when it comes to prescribing an antibiotic for an illness.

An alternative to Amoxicillin is Penicillin with the exception that it does not work that well against streptococcus pneumococcus which is frequently associated with meningitis. It can also be an effective treatment against Lyme disease, Chlamydia, Fleliobacter pylori and many other types of infections.

As far as side effects go, Amoxicillin causes nausea, IBS, skin rashes and it can make the tongue appear darker. These side effects are not common and may manifest differently or not at all depending on each individual and how their body tolerates Amoxicillin.

Augmentin

Augmentin is made using amoxicillin and clavulanate. Clavulanate acts as a beta-lactamase inhibitor which blocks the production of enzymes that lead to antibiotic resistance. This makes Augmentin work very well against harder-to-treat infections.

Doctors will prescribe Augmentin for sinus and ear infections, skin abscesses, chronic strep and many types of infections.

In terms of side effects, some patients that take Augmentin may experience diarrhea, nausea, rashes or even vomiting. The rate of occurrence of these side effects is higher in Augmentin than in Amoxicillin.

Taking the Right Antibiotic

Choosing between Augmentin and Amoxicillin is up to the doctor prescribing the treatment. Not getting the correct one may lead to antibiotic resistance which in turn will cause the infection to be more difficult to treat.

Amoxicillin is considered a narrow-spectrum antibiotic. It can be used even against serious illnesses such as Pneumonia. When Amoxicillin appears to be unable to treat the infection effectively, doctors may switch to a broad-spectrum antibiotic such as Augmentin. In general, Amoxicillin is used much more frequent that Augmentin.

What Not to Do

There are a lot of patients that do not take antibiotics seriously enough. One common mistake is to stop the treatment earlier than what the doctor prescribed. This may cause some of the bacteria to survive, suffer mutations and become immune to that antibiotic. If this happens with Augmentin, severe complications may occur.

Another mistake is to take a different antibiotic than the one prescribed by the doctor. This usually happens when a patient saves spare pills from a previous treatment. They use those antibiotics to treat infections without seeing a doctor.

Antibiotics have a very important role when it comes to infectious diseases. Their discovery helped save millions of lives. Flowever, it can be a double-edged sword. Both Amoxicillin and Augmentin can be dangerous if they are not taken strictly as the doctor prescribed them.

What is Epclusa?

6683209797918203042.jpg

If we were to rank all the important aspects of life, then health would be at the top. In essence, there is nothing in life as important as having a healthy life. For this reason, governments across the globe have made massive investments towards medical research projects aimed at enhancing quality health. As a result, we have seen introduction of health products that continue to play a major role in the promotion of healthy living. One of these major breakthroughs has been the introduction of Epculsa.

What is Epclusa?

Epclusa is a brand name medication that contains two drugs, which are 100mg of velpatasvir and 400 mg of sofosbuvir. The composition has been effective in treating patients who have never gone through the hepatitis C treatment before. It is also used to treat people who have been trying other medications without any success. One of the main benefits associated with this drug is that is can treat people who are with or without cirrhosis effectively.
In 2016, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Epculsa. This drug has had a dramatic effect in the treatment of patients diagnosed with hepatitis C. Hepatitis C occurs as a viral disease characterized by liver inflammation. This condition diminishes liver functions leading to liver failure. Clinicians use Epculsa to treat Hepatitis C among adults with the following genotypes 1,2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. In fact, this is the first medication proved successful in treating the six genotypes.

How does it work?

Epculsa treatment lasts 12 weeks when treating all types of mentioned genotypes. A combination of Sofosbuvir - velpatasvir work by inhibiting hepatitis Cans non-structural viral protein NSSB ribonucleic acid dependent RNA polymerase. On the other hand, Velpastasvir operates by inhibiting HCV’s non-structural protein. This composition has a high cure rate that stand about 97% up to 100% in patients who may be suffering from compensated cirrhosis or without cirrhosis.

Does it have any side effects?

Epculsa treatment’s side effects vary depending on the treatment composition and the patient. Essentially, most people do not experience what we can term as significant side effects. Common observable reactions are common when using Epclusa and ribavirin among patients with decompensated cirrhosis. Some of these conditions include headache, diarrhea, insomnia, nausea, fatigue and anemia.

It is important to note that most of these side effects tend to disappear after several days to a couple of weeks. If they are more severe, one is advised to consult a physician. One can get more information regarding these side effects from a doctor or physician.

What to avoid when taking Epculsa

When one is on this medication, it is highly advisable to avoid taking any form of alcohol. This is because alcohol increases the risk of other side effects. Furthermore, both hepatitis C and alcohol consumption brings about the inflammation and scaring of the liver. Alcohol also increases in the interference of sticking to the regimen as per the prescription.

Health is paramount, this should inform the choice of this medication when suffering from hepatitis C and its genotypes.
