Ciprofloxacin for bacterial infection


Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infection in children. It can be in the form of tablets or liquid form. This medicine can be used to clear bacterial infections this is by stopping the growth of these bacteria. It can be in the form of tablets or liquid form.

The medicine takes two days for its effect to kick in and it should be administered twice per day with an interval of between 10-12 hours apart, with an exception where the patient (child) becomes sick after less than 30 minutes after taking the drug then in this case you give them another dose but if they fell sick after 30 minutes of taking the drug then a normal dose is to be administered.

Cipro like other medicines, there are medicines that you cannot take while taking Ciprofloxacin at the same time such medicine include those that contain magnesium, calcium, or aluminum. Since this medicine contains antacids or indigestible remedies and thus there should be a time interval before administering ciprofloxacin, which can be 1-2 hours before this medication or 4 hours after the ingestion of this medicine that contain antacids. Others include ibuprofen which can cause a seizure if taken together with Ciprofloxacin and also medicine that contains theophylline in their prescription.

Side effects include;

• Diarrhea

• Vomiting

• Nausea

• Stomach pains

However, some of the side effects if experienced they should be reported immediately to a health facility include;

• Short of breath

• Swelling of tongue, lips or even the face

• Development of rash

• Allergic reaction

• Swelling of joints

• Diarrhea that contains blood or severe watery or if it takes more than four days.


I. If the medicine is in tablet form, swallow it with a glass of water or even juice. The medicine should not be chewed.

II. If the medicine is in liquid form then shake it well before giving it to the child.

III. Correct measurement should be given using either an oral syringe or medicine spoon. One is discouraged from using a teaspoon as one might not measure correctly.

IV. Ensure the child is not dehydrated. If you suspect they are, give them water and contact your pharmacist, doctor or nurse for advice.

V. Care should be given to the Child before they get used of the medicine especially when doing tasks that require coordination.

VI. Ensure you complete the dosage.

VII. Protect the child from the strong sun if you notice the change in their skin sensitivity. Can wear long-sleeved trousers, tops, and a hat or even use a sunscreen with high factor (at least SPF 30).

VIII. The medicine should be kept out of children’s reach.

IX. Only give this medication to your child for their current condition.

Disadvantage of Ciprofloxacin

1. Ciprofloxacin can cause an effect on the capability of the child to do skilled tasks such as driving, riding a bicycle or even playing sports.

2. The medicine may increase the child’s skin sensitivity to sunlight.
