Germany's modest Mutti Merkel is no Iron Lady Thatcher

Merkel pledged that "we will do everything together in the next four years to make them successful years for Germany." A new anti-euro party, Alternative for Germany, came close to winning the 5 percent support needed to win seats in Parliament on Sunday. The party, which advocates an "orderly breakup" of the eurozone and appeared to have a wider appeal to protest voters on the right, finished with 4.7 percent. Its leader, Bernd Lucke, said it had "taught the other parties to be scared" and "strengthened democracy in Germany." Merkel has pursued a hard-nosed course in the euro crisis, insisting on spending cuts and economic reforms in exchange for bailout struggling countries such as Greece. The bailouts haven't been popular, but Germany has largely escaped the economic fallout from the crisis, and Merkel has won credit for that. Europe played only a very limited role in the campaign. Still, senior Merkel ally Horst Seehofer, the conservative governor of Bavaria, conceded that the government needed to do a better job of explaining its policies.

EU-Russia summit: Russia must remember cold war is over, Merkel says

The 185-page treaty also includes a provision to lower the retirement age for some Germans. From July 2014, workers who have http://aleccqeu.blogs.experienceproject.com/2637365.html paid social security contributions for 45 years will be able to retire on a full pension at 63, two years earlier than is currently the case. If the deal is approved, as is widely expected, Merkel will be in line for a third term in office. 'Good for the country' Hermann Groehe, general secretary of Merkel's center-right Christian Democratic Union party, said in a statement on the party's website: "The work is done. The coalition agreement between the CDU, CSU and SPD bears a strong conservative imprint. "We have achieved a result that will be good for the country.

Germany's Angela Merkel signs 'grand coalition' deal with Social Democrats

"Ukraine wasn't ready to go further on integration with the European Union at this stage". Asked if she was disappointed, she added "Me? No. I think it's the Ukrainian people who should be disappointed." She added "I think today's Ukrainian leadership has chosen a way which is going nowhere. This is the decision of current Ukrainian leadership to stop progress in their country".

Yanukovych Gets Black Sheep Treatment In Europe

The European Union intends to hold a serious conversation about Ukraine with Russia. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said about this today in Vilnus, UNN reported referring to the TV "Channel 5". "We as the European Union have to talk to Russia, to avoid " us or them " approach concerning Ukraine. It takes a lot of time, and here is just the role for Germany, which it can play," - A.Merkel said. In this case, A.Merkel said that the EU still configures to cooperate with Ukraine, but the process of signing the Association Agreement can take quite a long time.

Angela Merkel Wins German Elections

WATCH: Merkel (at the 1-minute 48-second mark) and other officials chide Viktor Yanukovych, for the Ukrainian government's suspension of work on an EU Association Agreement: If this free were a Thanksgiving dinner, Yanukovych would surely be the black sheep, made to answer to distant relatives for a potpourri of unfulfilled promises. Instead it was a gathering in Vilnius of European leaders generally expecting -- until last week -- to initial an Association Agreement and Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area pact with Ukraine. In the 4 1/2-minute video, the Ukrainian leader is confronted by a host of counterparts -- European Commission President Jose Manuel Barosso, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, and Merkel -- for backing out last week of an Association Agreement with the European Union he had promised for months to endorse. Although most of the conversation is difficult to hear, the video provides a rare view of the arm-twisting -- or hand-wringing -- that accompanies diplomatic negotiations. It also shows Yanukovych's difficult balancing act, as he has attempted to move closer to the EU while also trying to avoid the costs of irritating Moscow.

Angela Merkel wants to have seriously talk to Putin about Ukraine

"This is a super result," she said. "I think we can all be proud." It wasn't the royal "we" Merkel was referring to -- a mistake former British Prime Minister and so-called "Iron Lady" Margaret Thatcher once cringingly made -- but rather some 41.5% of German voters. This is "Merkiavellism" at its best: Understated but achieving Nina dos Santos So much for those who say plainness precludes power. Set to become only the third post-war chancellor to win as many terms in office, Merkel's speech was a modest affair compared with those of other three-term titans like former British PM Tony Blair. For Merkel there was no vainglorious fist-thumping.

He had said to him, talking about the shooter case: 'I've made a stupid mistake', the source said. The man opened fire with a 12-gauge shotgun at the offices of Liberation early on Monday, shooting a 23-year-old photographer's assistant as he hauled gear in the lobby, then firing another blast that hit the roof before leaving within seconds. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West: Are They Living Apart?

On last night's (November 16) SNL, hosted by Lady Gaga, Jay Pharoah played Kanye and Nasim Pedrad played Kim as they hosted their own morning talk show, "Waking Up With Kimye." Kanye: "What better way to start off your morning than with our energy, my opinions, and the sound of Kim's voice?" Kim in a high-pitched whine: "Hi guuuuuyyys!" The sketch goes on for almost six minutes, bringing out "The Kardashian 11" with various Kardashians playing instruments, including the "satellite Kardashians" Kanye hopes to meet at Thanksgiving. Gaga was the show's guest, playing a nerdy girl who works at the Apple store's "Genius Bar" so Kanye screamed at her for not deserving the term "genius" like him and Kim. The sketch is pretty funny and includes a nice moment where Gaga pokes fun at her own over-the-top fashion. It goes on a little too long, but that's probably part of the statement about the couple.
