Germany Divided On Minimum Wage Plan

Basic staples of life, poultry and bread skyrocketed in price and the economy went through a period of hyper-inflation. With rising import prices due to a plummeting currency, industrial Iran is no longer able to compete. There are reports that the state manufacturing sector had laid off up to 800,000 workers in 2012 and those who have kept their jobs saw their wages eroded by skyrocketing prices. Oil executives with experience in the country say this initial agreement would help lift a cloud of uncertainty over the oil market, but that President Hassan Rouhani and his cabinet http://claudioqeaw.soup.io/post/369496851/Kim-Kardashian-Goes-Topless-Straddles-Kanye-West have to establish much better contract terms if this honeymoon period lifts sanctions. The blunt-speaking Chief Executive of French energy group Total, Christophe de Margerie, told me at an energy conference in Abu Dhabi this month that Iran needs to try and create a better climate for investment if this weekend's breakthrough is sustained. "I can tell you with the experience we have from Iran it doesn't always bring as we say in French partie de plaisir... a win-win." Oil giant Saudi Arabia has expressed doubts about signing a deal with Tehran, which will introduce more challenges within OPEC.

"It lies completely in Amazon's hands whether more strikes will take place in the upcoming Christmas season," Ver.di representative Mechthild Middeke said. The strikes affect Amazon's Bad Hersfeld and Leipzig sites. Ms. Middeke expects up to 600 employees in Bad Hersfeld to take part in Monday's strikes. In Leipzig, between 400 to 600 could participate, she said. Amazon has been a target of repeated strikes this year in Germany, its largest European market.

All 16 states told Reuters they have helped pay for data: Berlin and Hamburg say these purchases led to the recovery of more than 100 million euros each. But not all are convinced the system is legal. After initially joining in, one state - Brandenburg - said it was opting out because of such doubts. Last June, when the draft law on handling stolen data went to parliament, Brandenburg's finance minister issued a news release saying it would "provide long overdue legal certainty for our finance officials." The state which bought the material paid the shortfall, a spokesman for Brandenburg said. Volker Kauder, head of the parliamentary group for the CDU, is still "highly critical" about buying such data, a spokesman told Reuters.

Germany sends England to back-to-back Wembley losses for 1st time since 1977 with 1-0 win

However, the emphasis on money for pensioners, rather than for education; handouts for retirement-age mothers rather than help for young mothers; rent controls rather than innovative social housing in a word on policies that either cater directly to the grey-haired majority or reflect its views issymbolic. Germany may look like thestrong man of Europe but its underlying weaknesses are obvious. Germany is ageing and shrinking. France and Britain will overtake it soon, in terms of population. Too few women enter the workforce and they have too few children. Germany is over-reliant on industry and underperforms in services.

Merkel had opposed the center-left Social Democrats' call for an 8.50 euros ($11.50) hourly minimum wage in the run-up to the September election. Despite a clear victory at the ballot box, her conservative Union bloc lacks enough seats in parliament to form a government on its own, forcing her into lengthy negotiations for a "grand coalition" with the Social Democrats. "I too will have to agree to things that I personally didn't think right," Merkel told a meeting of business leaders in Berlin. "This includes for example the issue of a legally binding national minimum wage." An influential panel of government advisers warned last week that replacing Germany's patchwork of regional and sector-specific minimum wage deals could cause job losses in Europe's biggest economy. Merkel, who has been leading a caretaker government for the past two months, said she would seek to prevent this. "But a realistic view of the situation quickly shows that the Social Democrats won't leave such negotiations without a legally binding national minimum wage," she said at the event organized by Germany's Sueddeutsche Zeitung. Merkel called the formation of a new government "a responsibility" she felt obliged to meet.

AMC BERLIN -- Pay-TV network Fox Germany has launched an ambush campaign targeting female fans of The Walking Dead, using electronic billboards in Berlin subway stations that feature models who morph into zombies. our editor recommends PHOTOS:Gale Anne Hurd: Inside 'The Walking Dead' Producer's Nerdy Offices The campaign, developed by Berlin agency Saint Elmo's exclusively for Fox Germany, appears to be a standard billboard advertising a makeup remover (the "Good Night Cleansing Program") but as passerbys approach the ad, the cosmetics model morphs into a ghoulish zombie while the ad shifts to feature the Walking Dead logo and the tagline "Season Four First on Fox." Fox and St. Elmo's developed the campaign to appeal particularly to female viewers who, their research shows, are as avid fans of the series as the male demographic. "The campaign was inspired by a surprising insight that the horror genre is now as popular with women as it is with men," says Dennis Pfisterer, Creative Managing Director at Saint Elmos. "We drastically countered the outdated cliche that all horror fans are male by using a cliched image in the style of a beauty product ad, so that we could appeal above all to female horror fans, alongside male fans, with this concept of a makeup removal program for good TV nights.'" Fox Germany told The Hollywood Reporter that the campaign, currently exclusive to a handful of subway stations in Berlin, could be rolled out across major cities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the territories http://frankxuyr.u.yuku.com/bloggy/post/pid/37645 where Fox Germany carries The Walking Dead. Data last week showed economic growth in Germany helped the euro zone stave off stagnation as France and strugglers like Greece and Italy contracted. But German growth was only marginally stronger http://journals.fotki.com/rileyzajd/my-blog/entry/wdfwqggrftwsq/ than bailout recipient Portugal's 0.2 percent expansion. Economists expect solid growth in the fourth quarter. The Bundesbank said this week Germany was growing solidly and its upturn would likely be consolidated in the coming months thanks to domestic demand and an improved global environment. This week a survey showed the private sector's expansion gaining traction in November, suggesting the economy could expand by 0.5 percent in the final three months of the year. Another survey showed investor sentiment rising to its highest level in four years in November and the closely-watched Ifo survey of business sentiment due out at 0900 GMT is expected to show business morale rose slightly. But recent hard data, much of it backward-looking, has been more mixed, with industrial orders, exports and retail sales rising, clicking here though imports have fallen and unemployment has climbed.

The SPD says the plan would narrow the wage gap between west and east Germany, where workers are generally paid less. They also say the measure would reduce dependence on welfare benefits. While about 17 percent of Germans earn under 8.50 an hour, that number rises to 27 percent in the former communist east, according to a study released in September by the German Institute of Economic Research. Egon Brandstetter, who owns a bespoke tailor shop in Berlin and pays workers more than the proposed minimum wage, says he finds it hard to compete with others who pay their employees less. He says a minimum wage will level the field. "Sometimes if they can pay less, they do pay less," said Brandstetter, whose brightly-lit space sits on a bustling street in the former East Berlin. Kai-Uwe Mueller of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) says small service sector businesses with less than four employees would see costs spike by 20 percent and would have to reduce staff or work hours.

At Queen's Park, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne begs to differ. Deficit reduction may be important, she says, but she won't slash "necessary" services just to cover her government's fiscal shortfall. On the surface, it seems that Canada's two largest governments are at an impasse over economic policy, one not seen since 1991, when Bob Rae's Ontario New Democratic Party government famously announced it was breaking ranks with Ottawa in order to fight the recession rather than the deficit. "Our priority is clear," Ontario's current finance minister, Charles Sousa, told the provincial legislature last week as he introduced his fall economic update. "This government will continue to protect investments in jobs and families ahead of short-term (deficit reduction) targets." Five days later, federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty gave his response. "Balanced budgets signal stability," he told an Edmonton business audience as he released his own update.
