Cultural richness is the central of Indonesia’s identity as a country. This populous country consists of thousands different ethnicities that live harmoniously together. Each ethnicity has its own culture which reflects in varied aspects of life, such as living space. If you want to have a glimpse of the country’s rich culture, you should take a look at Indonesia furniture. Through this article, you are going to learn some furniture carving styles from several regions in the country. Each style has its own history and meaning. You can still see these carvings being incorporated in contemporary furniture.

Several Carving Styles in Indonesia Furniture

Carving is an artistic work of making design over a hard surface, such as wood and certain types of stones. Traditional carving has lived in Indonesia for centuries. These carvings can be found in buildings, ceremonial trinkets, and furniture. What will be discussed below is some carving styles that are native to Indonesia. Adding carved furniture to your home will elevate the aesthetical value to your home exponentially.

The first style that is going to be discussed is Balinese carving style. You may encounter it in some Indonesia furniture like chairs and tables. The culture of people in Bali centralizes around its major religion, Hinduism. When you are looking at relief carving on Bali furniture, you will see characters like gods and goddesses in Hindu. Relief carving tends to tell stories that you can find in the holy book. Furniture with Balinese carving style emphasizes natural color of woods that are used as its medium. The furniture is usually in dark brown or black color.

Jepara-style carving is another common carving style that you can find in Indonesia furniture. The carving often features in heavy furniture pieces like bed frame and cupboard. Usually, carved furniture from this region utilizes teak and mahogany woods. Because of its material and high level craftsmanship, the price of Jepara carved furniture can get very expensive. The carving has distinguishable shape of vine plant. There are several components of this carving: lung, trubusan, jumbai, and the fruit. On each leaf base, there will be three leaves sprouting out.

Another carving style in Indonesia furniture that should be mentioned is the Surakarta style. It also uses woods as carving medium. This style has subtle and balanced appearance. Carving patterns within this style tend to display the beauty of natural environment, mostly living plants. One common pattern that is often found in Surakarta-style furniture is fern. This pattern will display the warp of each tendril beautifully. The harmonious display of environment is going to improve your room’s visual attractiveness.

Aceh-style carving is a highly dynamic carving. Without doubt, this carving style is not nearly known enough as the previous styles. However, it does not mean that Aceh carving is less beautiful. Plants are the most common patterns you can find in this carving style. You can hardly find animal objects since they do not really suit its Islamic culture. This carving style is not present enough in Indonesia furniture. You can find it in traditional houses, though.
