Still Sexy After All These Years

(Tell that to Suzanne Somers.) Like many of her 60-something counterparts, Jane Seymour has no problem getting cast in a sensual role. The 62-year-old actress recently appeared on "Franklin & Bash" as a "sex surrogate." At 68, Tom Selleck is just as sexy as he was back in his "Magnum, P.I." days. (We think it has something to do with the mustache.) Even his 20-acre avocado ranch is "vaguely sexual ," as he told Conan O'Brien in 2011. Is it any wonder Bill Cosby's "Cosby Show" character, Cliff Huxtable, was always trying to get quality time with his wife, Clair? With Phylicia Rashad, who's still just as classy at 65, in the role, it was totally believable. Susan Lucci embodied sex appeal for decades as Erica Kane on "All My Children." Now 66, the actress has taken her spark from daytime to prime time -- she's starring on "Devious Maids," which she's described as a combination of "intrigue and murder, mayhem, little surprises and sexy.

He was only 2 years old when he ran into the side of a moving car. Age 4 marked the first time that he lost consciousness after a concussion, when he injured himself jumping from a bed. He lived life at "one speed, and that was a fast speed," said his mother. Suspicions that he could have CTE began percolating among family and friends after Freel killed himself a year ago. But he had had problems for a long time before he died.

Request flowers, wine or holiday-themed napkins and plates if guests want to contribute to the party and someone with a food allergy is attending. Look for "natural" turkey. Some pre-basted turkeys contain soy, wheat, and dairy. Instead, look for turkeys labeled "natural," which by law must be minimally processed. Some free-range, all-natural, fresh turkeys are free of antibiotics, hormones, and allergens. Avoid cross-contamination. Care with utensils and surfaces when preparing foods is a must.

Diabetes Drugs Affect Hearts Of Men, Women Differently News

But The Drug Isn't Likely To Result In Important Reductions In Weight, Said Lead Researcher Marian Mcdonagh.

The researchers found that the drugs had very different and sometimes opposite effects on the hearts of men and women, even as the drugs controlled blood sugar equally well in both genders. The study appears in the December issue of the American Journal of Physiology -- Heart and Circulatory Physiology. Although metformin had positive heart effects in women, it caused the heart metabolism of men to burn less sugar and more fats. Chronic burning of fat by the heart results in harmful changes that can lead to heart failure, said the researchers, from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. "Instead of making heart metabolism more normal in men, metformin alone made it worse, looking even more like a diabetic heart," study senior author Dr. Robert Gropler said in a university news release. "But in women, metformin had the desired effect -- lowering fat metabolism and increasing glucose uptake by the heart." Taking either rosiglitazone or Lovaza with metformin seemed to reduce some of the negative heart effects of metformin alone in men. Taking rosiglitazone in addition to metformin further improved women's heart metabolism, compared to taking metformin alone.

Typical Gum Disease Treatments Won't Help Ease Diabetes, Study Finds newsThere Was No Difference, However, In Blood-sugar Control Between The Two Groups, According To The Findings, Which Were Published In The Dec. 5899392099874348296.jpg

To find out, the researchers, led by Steven Engebretson of New York University, tracked outcomes for more than 500 diabetes patients with gum disease who were divided into two groups. One group's gum disease was treated using scaling, root planing and an oral rinse, followed by further gum disease treatment after three and six months. The other group received no treatment for their gum disease. Scaling and root planing involves scraping away the tartar from above and below the gum line, and smoothing out rough spots on the tooth's root, where germs can collect, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. After six months, people in the treatment group showed improvement in their gum disease. There was no difference, however, in blood-sugar control between the two groups, according to the findings, which were published in the Dec. 18 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. These findings do not support the use of nonsurgical gum disease treatment to improve blood-sugar control in people with diabetes, the researchers said.

Although Metformin Had Positive Heart Effects In Women, It Caused The Heart Metabolism Of Men To Burn Less Sugar And More Fats. Diabetes Drug Metformin Tied to Slight Weight Loss in Obese Kids news

But it isn't much more weight than kids who only make the lifestyle changes, according to a new review of studies. Some evidence suggests that metformin, in combination with lifestyle changes, affects weight loss in obese children. But the drug isn't likely to result in important reductions in weight, said lead researcher Marian McDonagh. Childhood obesity is a significant health problem in the United States, with nearly 18 percent of kids between 6 and 19 years old classified as obese. Metformin is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat type 2 diabetes in adults and children over 10 years old, but doctors have used it "off-label" to treat obese kids who don't have diabetes, according to background information included in the study. McDonagh's team analyzed 14 clinical trials that included nearly 1,000 children between 10 and 16 years old. All were overweight or obese.
