How Safe is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic – the largest non-surgical, non-drug prescribing, primary contact health profession in the world. A natural approach to health, chiropractic focuses on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system.
The primary focus of chiropractic is the location, correction and prevention of impairments to the nervous system. Chiropractic has an excellent safety record and avoids drugs and invasive procedures.

Is Chiropractic Safe?
YES! Each adjustment is tailored to the particular age, size, and unique spinal problem of each patient. After years of training, Chiropractors become skilled in their own unique techniques and methods ensuring extremely high levels of safety and patient satisfaction.

Chiropractic adjustments are so safe, even newborns and children receive adjustments. Early intervention helps to repair the damage caused from the birth process, learning to walk, and other incidental childhood mishaps.

In the words of the New Zealand Government’s Inquiry, Chiropractic care is “remarkably safe.” Chiropractic has an excellent safety record. It is the result of a conservative approach to health that avoids invasive procedures or prescription drugs. In relation to the treatment of neck and back pain, studies have shown that a course of Chiropractic care was 250 times safer than a course of anti-inflammatory drugs.

Yes. According to The Manga Report
The Ontario Ministry of Health commissioned Manga Report represents the largest analysis of scientific literature on the most effective and cost effective treatments for low back pain. After reviewing all of the international evidence on the management of low back pain, lead investigator Pran Manga, Ph.D., found the treatments provided by Doctors of Chiropractic were exceptionally safe - much safer than for standard medical treatments of similar conditions.
"There is no clinical or case-control study that demonstrates or even implies that chiropractic spinal manipulation is unsafe in the treatment of low back pain. Some medical treatments are equally safe, but others are unsafe and generate iatrogenic (doctor-induced) complications for low back pain patients. Our reading of the literature suggests that chiropractic manipulation is safer than medical management of low back pain."
"Indeed, several existing medical therapies of low back pain are generally contraindicated on the basis of the existing clinical trials. There is also some evidence in the literature to suggest that spinal manipulations are less safe and less effective when performed by nonchiropractic professionals"

How about risk of Stroke?
Besides patients and chiropractors, neck adjustment safety is the interest of another group of individuals: actuaries. Wherever there is risk, there are individuals hired to study it and predict it. It’s no surprise that most actuaries work for insurance companies. Their job is to study the data, compute the risk and protect the carrier from unprofitable loss.

In 2001, a major insurance company serving chiropractors published Current Concepts in Vertebrobasilar Complications Following Spinal Manipulation. The objective was to objectively assess the safety of chiropractic care. Among the 19 conclusions, the first one sums up the findings in one sentence: “Verebrobasilar complications (stroke) following spinal manipulative therapy (chiropractic adjustment) are very rare.” Because of its proven safety, malpractice insurance for chiropractors is a mere fraction of the cost that medical practitioners pay.

Over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen and aspirin are more dangerous than the risk of VAS due to Chiropractic. There is one (1) death for every 1,200 patients taking this type of medications for a period of two months or more.

Risks of long term use of paracetamol include liver and kidney failure.

Diclofenac, marketed as Voltaren, may pose greater health risks than the arthritis drug Vioxx, which was taken off the market in 2004, including a 40% increased chance of heart attack and stroke.

Is chiropractic safe during pregnancy?
Many women experience back pain during pregnancy due to the extra and unusual weight placed on the spine. Provided that the chiropractic procedure is carried out gently and with the extra care required in order not to create any detrimental affect on the expectant mum or baby, there is no good reason why chiropractic wouldn't provide relief from discomfort.
studies have shown that by providing a consistent programme of chiropractic care for the mum-to-be in pregnancy the nervous system and spine display healthy benefits before, during and after the birth.

More and more people are consulting with Chiropractors, especially in their later years.

With growing concerns about over-medication and the side effects of combining various prescription drugs, safe, natural Chiropractic care is growing in popularity.
